Houston Texans to Host NFL Playoff Game

There is a buzz around the city of Houston that has not been felt in nearly 20 years as professional playoff football is set to soon return.

The Houston Texans have clinched a spot in the AFC.

The Houston Texans are the 2011 AFC South champions and hold a franchise-best 10-5 record with one final regular season game this weekend. The team is guaranteed its first-ever playoff game at Reliant Stadium, the date and time of which will be announced the evening of Sunday, January 1. It will be either Saturday or Sunday, Jan. 7 or 8.

Season ticket holders have already been given an opportunity to purchase playoff tickets. A limited number of additional seats will go on sale Friday, December 30, through the Texans website.


The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a collection of works from the great Dutch Old Masters at the “Dutch and Flemish Masterworks from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Collection” exhibit lasting through February 12.

This collection features more than 60 17th Century masterworks by Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Hals, Gerrit Dou and others.

Artists from the Netherlands were the finest in the world during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th Century. These works are noted by their glowing quality of light and feature scenes of historical and Biblical events, portraits, still-lifes, land and seascapes, architectural interiors, and city views.

Exhibit hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10:00 am to 9:00 pm Thursdays, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm Fridays and Saturdays, and 12:15 pm to 7:00 pm Sundays.


For those who enjoy a touch of art with their miniature golf, Discovery Green has the perfect course for you.

Visit the Insperity Golf Experience at Discovery Green now through December 25, for a round of mini-golf like you’ve never experienced before.

This first-of-its kind attraction is a nine-hole course created by Houston artists. These unique holes include “A Sure Thing”, a narrow ramp that leads directly into a guaranteed hole-in-one, and “The Galactic Forfeit Cowboy Lounge”, a larger-than-life pin-ball machine where golfers use a spring launcher to sink their putts.

The hours of operation are Thursdays through Sundays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm for the general public and Mondays through Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm for private parties with a minimum of 24 people and an advanced reservation.

The festival is held annually the fourth weekend of October and showcases a pleathera of hands-on activities, battle re-enactments, Civil War camps, live entertainment, archaeological digs, food, craft vendors and much more.

The living history festival divides the fun into four historical eras - the 1830’s, 1860’s, 1890’s, and the 1930’s. This annual event has tickets on sale now, $10 for adults and $5 for children ages five to 15. Children ages four and under are FREE! The Texian Market Days is an affordable, fun outting for the entire family.


Brazilian Festival Comes to Houston Sept. 4

The Houston area is renown for its great diversity of cultures and peoples moving here from across the world. Next week come out for rhythmic music, exquisite food and lively dancing of Brazil.

The 2011 Brazilian Festival is Sunday, September 4, at Jones Plaza in Houston, from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm, sponsored by the Brazilian Arts Foundation.

Join a crowd of more than 2,000 people that gathers each year for this great event that coincides with Brazilian Independence Day.

There will be live music featuring both traditional and modern sounds from the a variety of Brazilian artists. The lineup includes: The BAF Ensemble performing Capoeira, Samba, Maculele, Puxada de Rede, Afoxe, Afro, Orixas, Samba de Roda, and several other folkloric types of music.


Houston’s pint sized paleontologists will be thrilled to hear that their favorite PBS stars are headed to the Houston Zoo for a Big Screen debut! Everyone is invited to a special pre-screening event to see Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, Don and the entire Pteranodon family adventure into the city in their new one-hour special: Dinosaur Big City!, a DINOSAUR TRAIN movie.

On Saturday, August 20 the Houston Zoo will be partnering with Houston PBS/Channel 8 to host three screenings of this well loved animated children’s movie in the Brown Education Center at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm

The special screening is FREE with your Zoo admission on August 20, but seating is limited and will be first come, first serve, so make sure to arrive early!

The movie will air on August 22 at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm on Houston PBS/Channel 8.

HMNS Sneak Peek at Prehistoric Sea Monsters: Mosasaur

You could be one of the very first Houstonians to see what might be the most significant prehistoric monsters, Mosasaur, moving into the new Houston Museum of Natural Science Paleontology Hall scheduled to open to the public next summer!

Members will be the first to go on this free prehistoric safari in the new, world-class, football field-sized paleontology hall on June 16 at 6 pm. Houston Haute Wheels Food Truck Festival

Haute Wheels Food Trucks are setting their gourmet food trucks up to leave traditional drive-thru restaurants in the dust – with a whole new way for hungry patrons to indulge in quality cuisine on the run!

The festival, celebrating ‘haute’ cuisine presented in a compact, yet fresh right-to-you way, will be held at Houston Community College Southwest Campus, West Loop Center, Houston, on Saturday, May 14 from12:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 15 from 12 to 5 p.m.

Tickets for adults 21 and up (IDs will be checked at the gate) are $16 and include a drink card good for 5 samples or one glass of beer or wine, ages 13 to 20 are $16 and includes 5 drink tickets for nonalcoholic beverages and kids age 12 and under get in free.
