Mardi Gras has begun! And what better place to experience the culture, life and festivities than throughout the Houston area. Here is just a sample of the area festivities highlighting the coming days and culminating on February 16th with Fat Tuesday. Whether you choose one, two or all, take some time to celebrate and enjoy these lively local events!

Come celebrate as Galveston Island comes alive for Mardi Gras! Galveston - the 99th annual event since 1867. With 11 parades and over 50 galas and festive events this will be a week featuring festivities for everyone. There will be a beachfront carnival, shopping, and a nightlife featuring music from salsa and jazz to rock’n roll.

The Houston Ballet is celebrating its 40th Anniversary during the 2009-2010 Season and this Holiday it features Ben Stevenson’s breathtaking production of The Nutcracker - “the crown jewel of holiday entertainment” according to The Houston Chronicle. The Holiday classic, with music by Tchaikovsky, is set in 19th century Germany and opens at a family Christmas party where a little girl named Clara receives a Nutcracker from the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer.
As the magic unfolds Clara and the children play with wind-up dolls and watch Dr. Drosselmeyer’s magic tricks in amazement. They watch in awe until the party draws to an end and the children go to bed, only for Clara’s real adventures to begin. People of all ages will enjoy watching this classic Christmas story, and their eyes will dance with the ballet as the nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince and Clara’s house becomes a land of snow before they sail across a lemonade sea.
The Nutcracker, by The Houston Ballet Company, continues to enchant audiences with its lively music and magical story performed by the best ballet dancers in Texas. The talented performers will be joined by Chinese star Chi Cao, who performs the title role in the film Mao’s Last Dancer, as he makes a guest appearance as the Prince during the matinee performances on December 22 and 23. The dancers will perform among the glorious scenery and in the magnificent costumes designed by Tony Award-winning designer Desmond Heeley.
To make the evening more magical children in the Junior Patrons program can join the cast backstage after the show, delighting as they meet the sugar plum fairy, the prince and other stars of the show
The Nutcracker will run between November 27 and December 27 at the Brown Theater at Wortham Theater Center at 501 Texas Avenue at Smith Street. There will be a discounted performance on Sunday December 27 at 7:30pm. Vintage Park is giving Santa Claus a place to hang is hat for the holidays.
The Park is hosting photos with Santa and complimentary carriage rides on Saturdays from noon until 4 p.m.
"Photos with Santa are being taken in a portrait sitting," said Melissa Goedde, Director of Retail Management, withThe Interfin Companies. "In addition to receiving their photos on site, families have the option to view all images from their session online and order reprints, additional sizes or even holiday cards."
Photos with Santa are taking place at the main entrance of the shopping center, across from Signature Home Theater.
"Response to the Santa photos and carriage rides has been wonderful," Goedde said. "Over 200 families have visited Santa at Vintage Park this year, and both children and parents have enjoyed the more personal Santa photo experience, without the hours of long waiting found in typical mall settings."

Are you in Houston and looking for something fun? Saturday,
September 12th is Museum District Day in Houston. Just head over to
the Houston Museum District between 10 am to 5 pm for a free day of
fun and education at the museums within the district. There will be
many performances, hands on activities, exhibits, and more to see
and do.
The free events at the 17 museums include:
10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m.:
Inventor's workshops at the Children's Museum of Houston.

Mischer Community residents can look forward to an entertaining, thought-provoking event if they visit the Russian Culture Center this weekend. The RCC has recently opened an Art Exhibition for Dmitri Koustov titled "Megapolis". The exhibit is open now through October 16th, 2009. From Monday through Friday you can see the exhibit from 8:30am to 5:30pm and Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Admission is free and visitors may even purchase some of Koustov's works.
Dmitri Koustov has works all over Europe in private collections through Austria, Germany, France, Russia, England, Singapore, and Finland as well as in the United States, and the Ivanovo Art Museum. His works are comprised of intense, vivid color with balanced harmony. His abstract works bring about emotions of positivity.
"Creating an abstract composition that has a luminous mixture of forms and colors brings me happiness, inner strength and freedom. I hope that viewers will feel the same when they see my works… I think that the task of the artist is to show the things that one can feel but not see. And that’s what I am awaiting from my public-imagination and fantasy" - artist Dmitri Koustov.
Koustov is a graduate from Ivanovo Art Institute, and previously worked in St. Petersberg, Russia and Moscow. Currently he resides in College Station, Texas.
